The year 2014 had highs and lows but I wouldn't trade the year for anything! If I had to describe 2014 in one word it would be transparency. I say this because it was definitely a year where a lot of things came to the forefront that I didn't expect but I felt like it needed to happen. From my work- life balance to world issues to personal relationships, I noticed I made some people and things in my life more of a priority than myself. I believe this is one my Achilles Heels because I'm known for always putting myself last on the list but that's changing for 2015, I'm learning to put myself first for a change. I'm responsible for my own happiness, no one else! I'm also responsible for maintaining a sense of peace in my life that can only be experienced through God and so my faith level has increased immensely!

With that said, I've always been a private person but more than ever, I work extra hard to keep it that way because that's apart of living a peaceful life. Social media can easily confuse people into believing they have a right into your life based on what you post but remember folks, don't believe everything you see, hear or read (Journalism 101). We live in a world where perception is everything and a lot of people make assumptions about who you are based on what you do and say so I learned a long time ago to not feed into it. To this day, only a close circle of friends and family will ever know the matters of my heart...period. If you don't know what's going on, than it's safe to KNOW you aren't in that circle! #Sorrynotsorry Plus, I've been burned before with people sharing my business or my dreams with outside people and I didn't appreciate it! There are just somethings that I'm never going to bend on and privacy will always be one.

Also, we've all experienced so much division going on in the world today due to socioeconomic differences, gender/sexuality inequality and racial injustices(there are NOT new subjects) etc. but more than ever these issues are being brought into the light as they should. Unfortunately, most of these issues are only deemed important when there is lots of bloodshed involved but like the news says, "blood always leads." These recent events have called a lot into question about the fate of our world, our political systems but most of all US. However, I'm confident we can turn all of this around because in the end we all want peace, love and happiness in the end right?

In order to be a better world, we have to be BETTER people! We've got to be held accountable for our actions and we also have to be on the same page for change. This process won't happen overnight but we are all here on assignment (whether you know that or not) so it is time to answer the call! It's exciting to see people from all walks of life fired up for change and I believe it's possible if everyone remains level-headed in the process. We are merely scratching the surface on a lot of these deeply rooted issues folks, but if we are consistent in our message and actions than I do believe change will happen. Trust the process everyone....

For 2015, I look forward to expanding my territory in all aspects of my life personally, professionally, financially, emotionally and spiritually. Honestly, I do want world peace! It may sound cheesy but we seriously need peace in this world. I'm also looking forward to creating new memories with my sweet friends and family. That's all I really want in life! I feel nothing but great vibes for 2015 and I receive whatever God has for me next year because I know it's all apart of His greater plan for my life.

With all the season of giving and cheer in full swing, it might be hard to be "merry" when you're solo this holiday season. Don't get down about it though because there is plenty you can do to still enjoy yourself.

1) Go to holiday parties! Make sure that you mix and mingle at social gatherings. It's possible that you'll meet other singles there who are looking to meet someone like you. Just watch out for that mistletoe :)

2) Enjoy spending time with loved ones and dear friends! You don't have to be alone on the holidays if you don't want to. Make your rounds in visiting those you who care about you the most. As long as there is hot coco, movies and food, you're bound to have a good time! Don't forget to take pictures!

3) Host a Friendsmas! You may not be the only one alone on the holidays so if you have friends or close coworkers who aren't going home for the holidays, why not create some memories with them. Make it fun too! You can have an ugly Christmas sweater party and/or white elephant gift exchange. Bake cookies, drink yummy booze and dine on some delish dishes potluck style and you're sure to have a blast.

4) Travel! Why not travel to an exotic place for a change? Nothing says "me" time like a warm and tropical environment to just decompress from your day to day hustle and bustle. Splurge a bit too! Book an appointment for a mini-makeover, a massage on the beach and enjoy paradise. If not tropical, try Europe! I've always heard one of the best times to travel to Europe is during the winter months.

I hope these ideas lifted your spirits! Xo
I am a HUGE Janet Damita Jo Jackson fan and I've been jamming all day to her station on Pandora. Whoo hoo! It just so happens "That's the Way Love Goes" filled my speakers so I just had to make her my throwback Thursday Jam of the Day! She's a BILLIONAIRE BOSS and I love her all day for her sultry voice, creativity, mystery, and sensuality. She's a fearless gem and she can do NO wrong in my book. I love you Mrs. Jackson-Al Mana.

With technology ruling most of our lives, it's very easy for it to also interfere with the relationships we have with each other. We've all either seen, witnessed or experienced relationships be torn a part by a split second decision to post our thoughts and emotions for everyone to see. In most cases, we aren't thinking with a clear head when we feel someone has done us wrong in the relationship without even thinking about the repercussions of our actions.

With all of this in mind, I believe the best way (and most healthy way) to have a relationship is to live it offline. Personally, I've always valued being a private person and to those I care about deeply, I value them too much to put all of our information out there (even if it's a break up because at some point in the past we meant something to each other!). In the digital age, we are EXPECTED to share everything that we do every waking second and when you don't, you're ridiculed for it.

:Sidebar: No shade but can you believe since the inception of Instagram, I've managed to NEVER activate an account??? I would only consider it for business terms but never for personal reasons.

As a result, I've never been a firm believer of sharing matters of the heart with everybody and honestly, I prefer the less you know about me the better. You've got to save certain aspects of your life for yourself!! When you start sharing information with the world, you give people free access to comment (I'll never understand why people get upset about comments from people when YOU put it out there first) or judge your situation. If you don't want opinions/comments/judgments, don't put your business out there. Also, it also invites people into your relationship that really have no business being apart of it, so again, less is better.

Some may argue that social media gives them a place to "keep it real" because they have nothing to hide and while we all welcome transparency, it leaves some to think about the authenticity or genuineness of your approach. Also, it might come off as opportunity to put on a show for people or humiliate the other person so you just have to tread lightly on your deliverance.

It's okay to be a little selfish in how you share information when it comes to matters of your heart because once you open that door, you're more susceptible to drama when you share it with the world.

Enjoy your privacy people! Privacy = Peace.

MARSALA!

In case you missed it, Pantone the makers of living fashionably in color, has declared this THE color of 2015. It's a warm color, slightly "seductive" yet classic at the same time. While this color is a cousin of the red family, it has hints of a more warm berry tone if you ask me. Hmmm...the crazy thing is I recently purchased a pair of heels that matches this color without even knowing that this would be THE color. I've never been a fan of the color red but it's not red red (no typo!) so I'm confident I can rock this color.

What do you guys think?
This has made me feel all types of emotions: angry, disgusted, sad, and confused. Each day it gets harder to face the world with a smile knowing deep down inside, you’re fearful if this could be the day that you’ll take your last breath.

You wake up in the morning knowing in the back of your mind that there are some people in this world who resent you for the way you look, the color of your skin, the way your dressed, your sexual preference, your religious denomination etc. and each day, you’re supposed to carry on without apology for who you are but it is SO HARD y’all.

Today, I was apprehensive of writing this on my blog because I’d like to think of my blog as light-hearted and safe place to reflect on matters that mean something to me and I find this matter to be extremely personal to me. In particular, I am an educated Black woman who understands how hard it is to live and earn the respect of others in this country. Being Black in America is not easy because in OUR world (yes, there are two worlds), I’m considered to already have three strikes against me: 1) Being educated 2) being Black and 3) being a woman—therefore, I’m not only seen as inferior but I’m threat.

This is because society already had a preconceived future planned for me when my mother birthed me into the world. There was already statistical data and a stereotype placed on me before I could even walk or talk and it’s sad, this still exist today. Today, I feel like the “American Dream” feels more like a never-ending nightmare that I can’t wake up from. Then again, I’m not even sure if people like me were even considered a part of that dream in the first place.

It’s troubling to know that for years the justice systems and law enforcement that was designed to “protect and serve the people” or promote “justice for all” have become corrupt and unstable. How can people like me put their trust in the law when it doesn’t serve ALL people?

You can’t put your trust in mankind because we are all flawed. Instead, I’ve chosen to put my trust in God! He’s the only one that has remained steadfast in His love for ALL people and He is the only one I can lean on times of strife. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve made a commitment to put my faith FIRST and keep my opinions/emotions last. But don’t get it twisted, it’s hard every day to hold your peace but I’m doing the best that I can in this quick sand of turmoil. I have to believe in something and if I can’t always believe in myself every day, then I have to put all my trust in God. He is the only way!

I say all of this to say that we’ve got to band together for change! It’s no excuse that it is 2014 and it feels like we are reliving the 50s and 60s!! We’ve got to do better and it begins with each of us because we are all accountable for how this country operates. If you are a registered voter and a tax payer, you should be actively exercising this right anytime there is a state or local election…period. Everyone seems to come out for the Presidential elections but not enough of us are showing up to local/state polls where it equally matters! And to those who believe that voting isn’t going to change anything, think about running for office in your locality/state! If you don’t like the way something is being done than be the change! We all play a part in this so find your voice and exercise it (peacefully!). Protests and boycotts are great too but the real work happens on the Hill.

We’ve come this far by faith; let us not grow weary in this fight for equality for all guys.

Stay prayed up people! Xo

You never know what Google is going to come up with next but the "Made w/ Code Google" activity is lighting up the way for girls around the nation to enjoy the art of coding! Google takes you step by step to create a "Holiday Lights" tree (as you see above) that will light up with other trees during the Nation's Capital tree lighting ceremony Dec. 4th.

It's more than building a tree GIF. on your own but it's the first step in getting more young girls into coding. There is such a great need to get young girls and women exploring careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (better known as STEM) and Google has been a huge advocate in leading the charge. The fun doesn't stop there either! There are plenty other activities and resources available. This is a super cool effort and I'm here for it! Go Google Go!

This might seem petty or childish to some but I'm just being REAL, you can't eat every one's food this holiday season (or EVER actually)! With the holiday party invitations rolling in, it might put some of you (like me) in a compromising position on WTH are you going to eat at these parties???

I've never been a fan of eating other people's food unless I really know the person and how they live. The truth of the matter is I've seen and heard of some outlandish things happen to people when they've tried to eat someone else's food that they "know" (i.e. food poisoning, animal hair, human hair etc.). Honestly, we all take a risk everyday when we dine outside of our homes but the difference is you could actually sue an establishment, right a bad review (Thank God for Yelp!) and report them for not being sanitary but how do you sue a friend or coworker? You can't really without it getting messy and awkward.

Here are some survival tips for any occasion where questionable food is served:

1) Eat something before you go. If you have to "question" the menu of this invitation, then eat a nice meal or heavy snack before you go. This way, you aren't obligated to full out dine when you get there and you can always use the excuse, "I had a big lunch," take the food to-go and toss it when you get home! Keep snacks in the car or in your purse in case you get hungry.

2) Listen to your gut.- If you have to play a guessing game of "what is that?" or if the label doesn't match the visual presentation of the food, don't do it! Save yourself and your stomach the agony and walk away. You'll thank me later.

3) Follow your nose.- Again, if it doesn't smell appetizing to you than you are better off skipping it all together. There is no sense in wasting food that someone else could enjoy.

4) Look at what's been eaten the most.- If you notice something that a lot of folks are digging, it could be an indicator that this is something safe to eat. However, there is always a chance of disappointment so don't pile it on your plate until you've sampled it. If you like it, come back for more while supplies last.

5) When it doubt, fruit, cheese and veggie it out. People really CAN'T mess up a veggie/fruit/cheese tray especially if they were prepared by the grocery store. These are always safe staples at any holiday party so load up on those if you find yourself challenged. Crackers are good too! They'll hold you over until you make your escape.

6) Volunteer to bring something! If nothing else seems appetizing to you, at least you'll know you can eat on whatever you bought. I'm sure the host will appreciate the gesture. After all, this is the season of giving and cheer right? This goes for drinks as well. If you're not a fan of eggnog (I hate EGGNOG with a passion), you could always bring your own booze or sip on something non-alcoholic like soda or water.

I hope these tips were helpful! Have fun folks.
In case you missed my #NaBloPoMo journey, check out my labels to the right of this post to catch up on all of my post for the month of November.

What's more exciting is that we are in our final month of 2014! I can't believe how fast time as flown by. It just goes to show you that our time is limited and we should spend our time wisely with those who cherish us but most all of all, making memories of our life.

I'm so excited for 2015 because I have really great vibes about it and I'm already claiming happiness, peace, prosperity, (MORE) love, and excitement for the incoming year. For now, I'm going to make the most memories out of December! It's crazy but I already have a full schedule (till mid-Jan) that involves quite a bit of traveling and I'm soooooo here for it.

We are in the final stretch folks so let's make the most out of our final days in 2014! It's GO time :)mlle. Tell us about your character.
Being on TV would definitely be out of my comfort zone but I'm up for a challenge. If I could be a cast member on any television show, I would be apart of Andrew Zimmerman's "Bizarre Food" on the Travel Channel. I love to travel and I love watching Zimmerman's cultural exchanges with people from all parts of the world. While he is an aficionado of exotic cuisine, I wouldn't mind be apart of the ride to witness maybe even try some of these authentic dishes.

For me, I would more so want to be apart of the journey because I think it would be nice to a woman of color on TV to tell their story of their travel adventures with the world. For some reason, I think there is this unspoken myth that people of color don't travel (or not as much) and I believe I could eradicate that myth as well as bring a fresh perspective to my travel adventures/cultural exchanges.

That's all I really want right now considering it is very easy to get caught up in this crazy world.

I welcome change/transformation because it is opportunity for me to reinvent myself, push myself beyond my comfort limits and explore new things that I wouldn't necessarily experience on my own.

I welcome peace because it has always been a long standing need in my life. I've never been a drama-filled person nor do I want to start so I've learned separating myself from people, places or things that might trigger a negative reaction to be the best remedy. Don't mistaken my silence for being meek though, it's just that I've learned everything doesn't require an opinion or comment.

I welcome joy because I truly have so much to be thankful for and I don't want to take that for granted. Even in the midst of challenges, fears and set backs, I've learned the best medicine is maintaining joy (and laughter) in your heart at all times! It's all working out for the greater good anyway :)

What are you welcoming into you life these days?
In case you missed it, Beyonce' surprised us last Friday with a new music video called "7/11." The video is so H-town and allows you to see how Bey kicks it with her home girls in a massive hotel sleepover. We've all had those moments where we've danced around in our undies or PJ's at home alone (or with friends) and now Beyonce' shows you how it is done with a mean two-step.

Just remember to have plenty of red cups on deck and no liquor touches the floor! Get crazy and have fun!

What do you think of her new music video?mlle.
I can't live without a stove or a grill of some sort. It took me some time to figure out what appliance I couldn't live without but then I started thinking about how I could manage without others. Without a stove or grill, you can't make fire which is one of the most important survival needs for humans. You can perform a multitude of household duties with this one appliance and for the most part, it could keep me functional on my day to day needs. You can heat water to wash clothes or bathe, you can cook and you can also get some sort of heat (if needed) and more.

Prompt: Do you have a book in you? Fact or fiction? Related to your blog or totally different?

I believe we all have a book inside of us and for me, it is in someways aligned with my blog. Without giving away too much detail, my book is centered around getting to know yourself in your 20's (which was the original purpose of my blog). I'm still not out of this age range yet so there is still room for growth;however, I've seen and experienced enough to say that this has truly been one of the hardest decades of my life. I do feel like this decade can make or break you and it sets the tone of how your life will be lived for years to come. By far, the world we live in today has made the transition from teen-hood to adulthood challenging to get through because it's a competitive world out there. Everyone is out here for self and it's rare that you get support nowadays!

This book would totally be a non-fiction book because while I do believe a lot of 20-something issues are discussed or published, where is the remedy to these issues? It's safe to say that most of us took the college or trade school route to better ourselves; however, we haven't reaped the fruits of our labors, just debt, debt and more debt. For those who jumped directly into the work force, many are finding themselves ill prepared and frustrated of not being taken seriously because they may lack the education or credentials they need to excel in their careers. It's a vicious cycle that many millennials face everyday so it's hard sometimes to remain encouraged in a society where a looming cloud of defeat trails you.

Prompt: Are you the funny one in most groups? What kinds of things do you find funniest?

I'm not sure if I'm the funniest one in my group of friends but I will say I love to laugh! For the most part, I do believe I can be funny at times but I enjoy watching jokes unfold with others. Since most of my friends are scattered around the world, we tend to link up and create new memories of laughter together.

My closest friends and I seem to make some of the funniest memories when we are traveling together. One of the funniest memories I have is when my friends and I went to the Dominican Republic and one of my friend's got soooo tipsy that she kept making phone calls home and she ran her phone bill up to $300+. We were at a party and she stepped out to talk on the phone so I followed her to see where she was going. I have no idea what she was talking about (she doesn't remember either lol) I tried to warn her many times to keep her convos short but she kept talking and talking and talking. I think at one point I fell asleep at a patio table and woke up AND she was still on the phone LOL. It was hilarious to all of us but it wasn't funny when that bill came to her that next month. I always look forward to trips with my girls because we always have a blast!

I honestly find a lot of things funny! Even when I'm stressed, I try to find laughter in the situation because I'm a firm believer that "laughter is the best medicine."mlle. We all have deal breakers but what is it about a person that causes you to think if you should stay or should go? No person nor any relationship is perfect but being honest with what you're willing to tolerate versus what's intolerable can truly make or break your relationship.

My personal deal breakers are:

Liars

Bad hygiene/grooming (and you refuse to fix it or you don't have a problem with it)

Disrespectful

Bad Teeth and/or breath (sorry not sorry!)

Lack of manners

No ambition

What are some of your deal breakers in a relationship?
The name already has a negative connotation attached to it considering some people are superstitious about the number 13 which correlates with being bad luck. If you aren't familiar with The 13th Floor, it is located in downtown Baltimore, inside of the Belvedere Hotel. It's funny how this restaurant uses the tagline "Lucky You" when in fact, there was nothing lucky about my recent experience.

Pros:

The restaurant has beautiful panoramic views of Baltimore and it almost makes you feel like you're in a glass jewelry box looking out to shiny gems (or in this case a lit up town).

They have live music (jazz to be exact) so it sets the mood of being a classy atmosphere. You can even dance to the sweet tunes if you want!

It's a small floor (the whole floor is the restaurant & bar) so there is a sense of intimacy. You won't have to worry about too much of a rowdy crowd, this is for a more mature audience.

The duck fat fries were amazeballs!

Cons:

Service is extremely slow! Like I said it's not an large restaurant nor was it that busy but don't bet on getting a drink order (not even a glass of water) in the first 10 mins. Nope! You'll likely have to get up and ask a hostess/host to find your server.

This place is strictly a small bites type of restaurant (this didn't bother me) but the menu is extremely limited. Also, I really wanted to try the mussels but they were out of them by 9:00pm??? It really grinds my gears when restaurants run out of something that they know is a popular dish on the menu. Maybe if the server was more attentive, I could have gotten an order in before they were out.

The BARTENDER has the worst attitude EVER! Like I said, I waited for a very long time to even get a drink order in and once I got my drink (wine), he shorted me on my pour. After waiting again to speak with my server who never came around, I decided to go to the bar to get this corrected. Instead of making the situation right, he gave me an attitude then he decided to give me a lesson in pouring AND he asked other customers for THEIR opinion on the amount I was given. He was a straight up a$$hole! He claims he gave my table extra pours because of the wait (everyone received this but me, I even asked him to come to the table to see how he poured everyone else's glasses) and all I wanted was for him to make it right and be fair but instead he decided to be A-Hole about it. He eventually gave me two extra oz but it left me EXTREMELY annoyed. I asked for a manger which brings me to point #4.

I asked for a manager ALL night after this episode! I explained the situation to my server who was nice about it but still didn't send the manager. The hostess even came to ask if the bartender ( I think his name is Dean) came by and the manager and I said "no" and she still didn't send anyone. I kept getting excuse after excuse that the manager might be busy but no manager showed up! As a paying patron, it should not be my job to seek out a manager when I have an issue with my dining experience. The matter should have been addressed promptly and they failed to put the customers needs first in this situation. This is something that I do not take lightly so I resorted to writing this post.

The food was meh! There was nothing overwhelmingly great. I tried the nightly special of bacon wrapped scallops but the dish was kind of cold when I got it. I didn't order anything else because at this point, I was OVER IT.

Based on Yelp, this place has a mixed bag of reviews. I'm a huge stickler for customer service and since the manager never came by my table, I felt the need to put it out there for those of you who might be interested in visiting this place (still would have wrote about them anyway). I will NEVER dine here again so beware.

Welp! The time is near (tomorrow to be exact) when the whole world will see the Aaliyah movie! Now if you do not know who the "Princess of R&B" is than I need you to take a moment and read up on her royal highness, affectionately known as "Babygirl."

Although, it has been 13 years since Aaliyah has passed, I can't help but feel bittersweet about this movie. For some reason, I'm not completely sold on supporting the movie (there was lots of controversy about creating this movie in the first place) but also, I feel like it's still too soon. She truly was the epitome of style, grace and talent all rolled into one while having the moves and an angelic voice that can't be replicated by ANY of today's artists. NOPE, not a single one!

Aaliyah was definitely "one in a million" and while her time here on earth was short lived, her music has lived on in the hearts and ears of many around the world. She is loved, treasured and valued by so many especially by her family and friends! I think that's why there has been a mixed bag of emotions about the film because most of us (her fans) feel very protective of her and how she is (and her life) is portrayed in this film. Not only was she a triple-threat, she was on the verge of building a successful empire that could have easily been a multi-million dollar kingdom.

I'm not sure if I'll be watching tomorrow night but eventually, I will because I am curious to see how all of this comes together. Aaliyah is still one of my favorite artist of all time so the connection runs deep for me.

The world premier of "Aaliyah: Princess of R&B" airs on Lifetime at 8pm on November 15th. Check your local listing for channel information.

Will any of you be watching? What are your thoughts on this movie?

*Update as of 11/17/14* I could not bring myself to watch the movie after all. Based on the comments I've read or heard about the movie, this film fell short in depicting Aaliyah as an iconic singer, actress and dancer. I pray one day that a better movie truly tells her story and shares her REAL gifts with the world.
To be honest, I do not know why I've haven't been eating pickles because I use to always keep a jar in my fridge whenever I wanted a quick snack and the best part is drinking the pickle juice! Sounds gross to some but I think it's a divine (and mandatory) experience that will change your life.

If I had to choose two snacks (Honorable mentions a cheese block with kalamata olives and crackers maybe mangos and pomegranates too!) that I couldn't live without, I think it would be pickles and popcorn. Not together of course but just because they both bring me so much joy!

Prompt: Have you ever had extended writer's block? How long did it last? What did you do to break out of it, and do you have tips for other bloggers?

I have had extended writer's block and I believe the longest I've ever had it last was almost a year. The hardest part of being a creative brain sometimes is that you're expected to have this endless reservoir of ideas but at times, your creativity dries up. The bulk of my block started because I just didn't feel motivated or inspired to write anything at the time. The best way for me to break out of writer's block is to take a trip or two to just clear my head. If I can't find the time to getaway, then I like to try creating new recipes. Cooking is my roundabout way of forcing me to still be creative but just in a different way.

I've always found trying something outside of your creative comfort zone to work for me. So even if you're not a painter, try a paint n sip activity, if you're not a great cook, sign up for a cooking class or if you dance like you have two-left feet, try a ballroom dancing class for fun! The point is you have to remain true to you're creative side but finding an outlet that still allows you to express yourself while picking up a new skill could be a great way to break your writer's block. Who knows? You might even discover hidden talents that you didn't know existed until you try something new!

I'd like to take today to salute our former men and women who have served this country! The sacrifices you all have made for this country do not go unnoticed and I thank you all for your service. You all are the REAL MVPs and SHEROS/HEROS of our country.

To celebrate your day, make sure you take advantage of the discounts and freebies/gifts that some restaurants and stores are doing to say "thank you" for your time in the armed forces. Also, make sure you call ahead to restaurants/stores in your area to see if they are participating in any special deals for veterans before you head out on the town (don't forget your military ID!).

Cheers to every veteran around the nation! Enjoy!
